   Rural and Community Development Program-Augustana Faculty, University of Alberta ::

Program description
This is a seven-month university program that gives students an opportunity to focus on critical issues in rural and community development at both local and international levels. The program takes place in rural communities in Alberta, Canada and Morelos, Mexico, and the daily life of the community is the foundation of reflection and learning. It is through interaction with the community that participants will gain personal and practical experience of community development issues.

Work projects are completed on an individual or group basis and are related to the following areas: youth, education, health, rural community development, agriculture and the environment. During the program, you and your counterpart (participant from the exchange country) participate in educational activities, are immersed in local culture and language, and share in the daily life of your host family.

Cost:
a) Full University Tuition, currently $4,890
b) International Program Surcharge $2,500
c) Program Deposit $500
d) Fundraise $3,500 (tools and training provided)

Note: All applicants are eligible for academic scholarships from Augustana Faculty, University of Alberta, as well as regular student loans.

Here’s what you could be doing…

In Canada, work projects are related to agriculture, social services and community groups, health, and the environment. Work placements in Mexico are similar, the goal being to observe and experience firsthand some of the realities of development.

  • Be in good health (you will be required to pass medical and dental exams if selected)
