:: Core Program ::
The Core Program is six months in length – half happens in Canada and the other half overseas. During the program, you and your counterpart (a young person from the exchange country) get involved in your host community through volunteer service and you live together in a host family. You also participate in educational activities with members of your group, permitting you to enrich and increase your understanding of global and local issues. You soon realize just how much you can learn by becoming active in your community! It’s an unforgettable intercultural and educational experience that enriches your knowledge and helps you develop new skills.

Each year, close to 400 young Canadians take part in the Core Program.

We accept applications throughout the year. However, candidates who apply before January 15 will have priority for programs beginning this coming summer – so don’t delay!

Program facts

Participants on the go in Jamaica. Age:

Cost:
To take part in the CWY program, you contribute:
- a $250 participation fee
- pre-program expenses: medical exam, passport, vaccines
- a minimum of $2100 in fundraising - don't worry: we will give you advice on how to fundraise effectively!
- your own spending money

CWY pays the rest:
- domestic and international travel
- insurance (life and liability insurance in both countries and health insurance overseas)
- lodging
- food
- educational materials

Here’s what you could be doing…

Working on a committee with various First Nations representatives to organize the First Nations Summer Games in Saskatchewan, and then, helping out at community soup kitchens for marginalized children in Uruguay.

CWY is for young people from all cultural backgrounds, all regions of Canada, and all walks of life! To participate, you must be:

a Canadian citizen or landed immigrant
between 17 and 24 years old
in good health
open-minded, motivated, and able to exercise good judgement
