Alexandre Trudeau, chair of CWY, and Matthew Pearce, president and CEO,
invite the whole CWY family to become actively involved in a project launched by
founding president Jacques Hébert.
The Youth Volunteer Coalition, which
includes CWY, Katimavik, Oxfam-Québec, Club 2/3, Development and Peace, Mer et
Monde, and Clowns without Borders, aims to sensitize public opinion and the
government to the importance of granting the necessary resources to NGOs sending
young volunteers to serve communities in Canada and abroad.
Did you know
that, because of a lack of resources, NGOs must turn away the vast majority of
applicants wishing to participate in youth volunteer programs? To
spotlight this little-known fact, the Coalition has decided to present MPs and
Senators with the largest possible number of signed petitions during
Parliament’s next session. The entire CWY family – participants, former
participants, field staff, office staff, partners in Canada – host families and
communities, friends, and donors – is invited to put their shoulder to the wheel
by endorsing and circulating petitions in their community.
These
petitions, which will be tabled in the Senate and the House of Commons this
fall, will highlight the fact that the government must meet the needs of young
people wishing to devote several months of their life to doing unpaid volunteer
work by granting the necessary resources to make this happen. The time has
come to act!
