Update Indonesia - January 2008
January 3, 2008

Over the course of the last 2 weeks, Canada World Youth has been closely monitoring the situation in Dumbaya Bulan and surrounding areas, with regular phone calls and emails with our field staff and partner.  As we last reported, the team was temporarily relocated to Gorontalo, where they stayed at a local youth hostel and were under the care of our local partners and field staff.

In closely monitoring the situation with our partners, local authorities and field staff, it was decided the team would return to Dumbaya Bulan on December 27 as the rains had ceased and the roads connecting Gorontalo and Dumbaya Bulan were in full use again.  The team returned on the afternoon of the 27th, where they were greeted by their host families and community members.  Since returning to the community the team has been busy completing their community orientation, working with local youth to run a series of sports and recreation events and they have begun teaching English and French to children and youth in the community.  The team also celebrated New Year’s Eve in the community with their host families and members of a local youth group.

Please know that the health and safety of participants is the number one priority of CWY and MENPORA and we will continue to work to proactively manage the health and safety of participants.  The president of Canada World Youth, Mr. Don Johnston, will also be visiting the team in mid-January 2008.

For an overview of CWY’s approach to health and safety and how we manage risk, please visit our Overview of Health and Safety Issues within CWY Programs

This site will be updated when there is any change in the status of the program.
